Annually, grant funds purchase plants, seeds, and shrubs for the herb garden at Boerner Botanical Gardens, and items for the annual theme-based displays. In the past, our funds have been used for signage, reproduction of a historic bird bath, concrete planters, decorative trees, and the refurbishing of a boxwood hedge.
Grant funds are also given to Friends of BBG to provide Milwaukee Public School third and fourth grade students the opportunity to participate in hands-on learning sessions at the gardens. Sessions began in 2005 as the “Plant Hope” project and teach students plant biology, soil preparation, and the planting and harvesting of flowers, herbs, and vegetables.
We support various historical gardens and related projects at Wisconsin’s largest outdoor museum, including: development of Sanford House Herb Garden; two historic watering machines; historical Teaching Garden at the entrance and signage; rose bushes near Clausing Barn; terracing at the Danish immigrant farm; enhancing the landscape and garden at Hessian immigrant farm; and support of the 1860s Norwegian Farm with the purchase of plant material used for dyeing.
